Pre-Kindergarten - Social Emotional
Independence – What does it mean for a pre-kindergartener?
Independence in MCC’s Pre-Kindergarten Program means seeking cooperative play opportunities, beginning to solve conflicts, and developing a sense of pride in one’s effort to learn new skills.
What are our goals for our pre-kindergarteners?
• To engage in cooperative play with peers.
• To begin to solve conflicts through verbal expression of one’s ideas and
feelings.
• To recognize and respond to others’ thoughts and feelings.
• To develop an understanding of actions which prevent or contribute to
problems with peers.
• To show pride in one’s effort and persist when faced with challenges.
How do we teach these skills?
• Teachers structure activities that require the use of cooperative skills.
• Teachers ask questions to guide children to express their thoughts
and feelings during a conflict.
• Teachers cue children to look at, listen, and respond to each other.
• Teachers discuss why one’s actions elicit particular responses from
others.
• Teachers set clear expectations that challenge each child’s skills and
provide support for the child to reach his/her goal.
